46 players qualify for The Alberta Open presented by SVR Lawyers in Calgary region

Alberta Golf (Calgary): The second qualifier of championship season was held at The Canal at Delacour on Tuesday, May 31 which saw 46 players punch their ticket to the Alberta Open presented by SVR Lawyers June 21-23 at Sundre Golf Club.  

Brady McKinlay and Jordan Bean shared low medalist honours shooting 4-under 68.

UpSwing by Alberta Golf starts 2022 recreational events in the mountains

Alberta Golf (Calgary): Alberta Golf’s new recreational brand “UpSwing by Alberta Golf” had a successful start to the season with UpSwing events at The Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Resort and Stewart Creek Golf and Country Club Sunday May 29th and Monday May 30th.

New Brand “UpSwing by Alberta Golf” is Up and Swinging!

There’s a new recreational brand in the Alberta golf market, UpSwing by Alberta Golf is up and swinging. A 2-year survey highlighted a need in the province to have a landing space for recreational players to find fun events throughout Alberta.

Whether it’s finding a golf course to play, fun events to play in, discounted events or earning points towards a year end event over 185 golf courses in the province have joined the platform and can be searched.

“Our Province offers so many opportunities, we now have a ‘go to’ site to find them.” said UpSwing Brand Manager John Burns. “In the First year we’re taking baby steps, providing a handful of events hosted by Upswing but moving forward we anticipate the potential for hundreds of events and access to all the courses in the province.”

UpSwing Membership is FREE for everyone. An UpSwing Premium Membership is only $19.95 and free for Golf Canada members. The Premium Membership gives you discounted rates into our events as well as the opportunity to start collecting loyalty points towards our year-end invitational event.

 Alberta Golf tournament registration is one week away and golf courses across our province are preparing to open soon. There was great interest in the game in 2021 and that should continue this year. There is certainly excitement that golf will continue to play a big role in boosting the economy and creating positive mental and physical health for people across the province. APRIL 1 CHAMPIONSHIP AND JUNIOR TOUR REGISTRATION: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.
Our Championship registration opens at 9am on April 1 with The McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour registration opening 3 hours later at noon. Golf Genius centralized registration for all events will be used again in 2022. Please ensure your Golf Canada Score Centre profile is updated in order to register for events. CLGA UPDATE
 
The Calgary Ladies Golf Association is gearing up for a full event program in 2022 including all amateur tournaments for ladies, senior ladies and junior girls. The event season kicks off in early May with the 38th annual Rileys Best Ball Ladies Classic, the longest running best ball tournament in Canada.

CGA UPDATE
 
The Calgary Golf Association has a full schedule planned this season including the CGA Calgary Junior Boys Championship being held at Elbow Springs Golf Club June 29-30.
The Champion will be exempt for the 2022 Alberta U19 Championship, and the CGA U18, U16, U14 age group winners will qualify for the 2022 Alberta Golf McLennan Ross Junior Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf & RV Resort on Aug 29.

2022 Alberta Golf Board of Directors elected. 2021 Annual Report released

The Annual General Meeting of the Voting Members of the Alberta Golf Association was held virtually on Wednesday, March 23. Subsequent to the AGM, the Board of Directors met and the following officers were named:

Secretary: Chris Leach

Mark Bamford returns for a second term as President of Alberta Golf. Under Mark’s leadership over the past twelve months, the Association has maintained a high level of procedural governance and has ensured communications between Golf Canada and Alberta Golf remain strong through his work with the Provincial Council. His financial background and governance oversight has allowed Alberta Golf to move forward with CRA approval for a change to our fiscal year-end which will result in improved operational planning. Mark has also led the Board’s oversight in launching a new brand, UpSwing, dedicated to supporting recreational golfers in our province.

Two Board Members had their terms come to an end at this year’s AGM: Tiffany Gordon and Alonzo Strange have served a combined 15 years on the Board and have both committed to remaining close to the organization as they take on new respective volunteer roles outside of Alberta Golf. We thank them both for their incredible commitment to improving Alberta Golf during their time and we wish them tremendous success!

Two new faces join the Board for 2022: Shaane Nathu and Kim Carrington.

Shaane Nathu, a Chartered Accountant currently residing in Calgary and working with RSM, possesses a keen interest in golf and looks forward to sharing his financial expertise. An avid golfer himself, the blood lines run deep in this sport amongst Shaane’s entire family – he has caddied regularly for his brother, a past competitor at The Glencoe Invitational, who currently has PGA Tour Latinoamerica status.

Kim Carrington, a well-regarded player in her own right and champion many times over at the local, provincial and national level, has been a leader in the golf industry as a sales representative for more than two decades. Her current lines include all the G&G and ACI Brands, the Perri Ellis Group, Original Penguin, Callaway Apparel as well as Cole + Parker. Since the day she was born Carrington has been immersed in all aspects of the golf industry – her father Bill Carrington, a longtime PGA of Canada Golf Professional at Windermere G&CC and her stepfather Jim Jempson who spent three decades as PGA of Canada Head Professional at Willow Park G&CC are both influential leaders of the game in their respective regions.

The Board of Directors are extremely excited to have Carrington and Nathu join Alberta Golf at a time when golf is gaining popularity across many new market segments.

Championship & Junior Tour Registration: What you need to know.

We’re 2 weeks away from April 1st registration for all of our Championships, Qualifiers and McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour events. Here’s what you need to know.

CHAMPIONSHIPS AND QUALIFIERS

Championship and Qualifier registration opens on April 1 at 9am.

Those who wish to register MUST have an active Golf Canada Membership with all profile info up to date with current email and phone number.

Some additions to this year’s events include The Mens Mid Amateur Championship having 2 qualifiers due to the high demand for registration, The Ladies Amateur Championship adding a Club Team Championship and keeping their Net Championship again this season while the Senior Ladies Championship will have the Net Stableford Division again this season.

MCLENNAN ROSS ALBERTA JUNIOR TOUR 

The McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour registration opens on April 1 at Noon. 

Players do NOT need a Golf Canada Membership to register for the 23-event Junior Tour.

There is a new qualification process for the season ending Tour Championship which is based on results and points associated with finish position at each event.

Alberta Golf Association Foundation conducts virtual AGM

Alberta Golf (Calgary) – 

The Annual General Meeting of the Alberta Golf Association Foundation was held on February 23, 2022 by virtual conference.

The eleven members of the Foundation who were able to attend were informed by the Foundation’s Treasurer Neil Little that the entity remains in a significantly great financial position. This will enable the organization to continue providing post-secondary scholarships to approximately 50 students each year.

At the annual meeting, the following individuals were elected to the Board of Directors for 2022: Leigh Cormack, Jim Dymianiw, Richard Emery, Darrell Hodges, Neil Little, Dave Mitchell, Karen Wingnean.

Jim Dymianiw will take over from Tom Zariski as President of the Foundation as Tom’s term on the Board has now ended.

Tom Zariski’s ten years of service and dedication to the Foundation were acknowledged by all members in attendance and as everyone knows Tom will continue to remain involved with the Foundation and with Alberta Golf in some capacity.

Joining Jim as officers of the Foundation for 2022 are Leigh Cormack (Vice President), Neil Little (Treasurer) and Dave Mitchell (Secretary).

35 Golfers assisted by the 2022 Alberta Golf Athlete Development Program

Alberta Golf (Calgary) – Alberta Golf is assisting 35 Golfers across the province in 2022 in the Athlete Development Program.

The program is designed to help golfers throughout Alberta reach their competitive goals in the sport.

Support is provided to athletes, coaches and facilities through a tiered program that includes: local camp grants, interprovincial team opportunities as well as funding for high performance athlete development.
