At 8:00 AM I peer out my bedroom window to see what the weather gods are up to. Gloomy grey clouds are hanging over everything and the forecast isn’t pretty. Freezing rain, turning to snow later in the day. 10 centimeters possible. Blizzard warnings outside the city. Ah, yes, spring in Alberta. A golfer’s nightmare.
Thankfully, in a couple of hours I’ll be teeing it up at Pebble Beach with a few buddies. And good times will be had. Short-sleeve weather. Cold beer. Hot wings. Big match with bragging rights on the line. Ah, yes, indoor golf in Alberta. For me and thousands of other “swingers,” it’s a game changer; a foul-weather lifeline to the game we need for our sustenance.
True, if we lived in San Diego, Sarasota Springs, or southern Spain, this wouldn’t be an issue. But we don’t. So, it is.
Not surprisingly, given the number of golf addicts in Alberta, indoor golf centers, bar-room simulators, golf domes, heated driving ranges, and the like, pepper the province. Every major city and reasonably sized community, it seems, has a place to play. Indeed, during spring sleet storms and, of course, winter wallops, there is no need to let your sticks gather dust. There are, literally, hundreds of options for indoor golf in Alberta.
In Calgary, one of the longest running indoor golf centers is the National Golf Academy. And Terry Carter, the Director of Golf at the facility, has seen plenty of change in the “indoor” industry.

“The evolution of indoor golf is fuelled by massive gains in technology,” says Carter, who has been teaching golf indoors in Alberta since 1990. “Back in the early 90s using video and software programs to analyze students was a very new ‘thing.’ Today’s data-driven approach has been a game changer. Advances in technology have transformed indoor golf facilities from simple hitting areas into highly sophisticated training environments. Using launch monitor technology can provide players with instant feedback on key data such as club speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin rates, and shot direction. This immediate feedback allows golfers to better understand what is happening during their swing and adjust more effectively than ever before.”
Unquestionably, teaching has also been transformed with technology.
“Teaching has taken a major step forward with the introduction of 3D motion capture and biometric analysis. These systems allow instructors to analyze a golfer’s swing in three dimensions, providing a much clearer picture of body movement, sequencing, and efficiency. This technology has created a powerful tool for teaching professionals to help their students improve faster and more efficiently.”
In fact, if you own a driving range and you are not considering adding simulators for off-season use and installing some type of technology that guests can use to track their shots and utilize for practice and games, you’re falling behind the curve. Golfers now are basically expecting some type of technology when they go to a driving range…indoors or out. It just makes the experience a lot more enjoyable.
Certainly, the “fun factor” is also huge when golfers can – on state-of-the-art simulators – play famous courses like Pebble Beach, Banff Springs, TPC Sawgrass, and the like, with technology that can include eye-popping 5K graphics. Many indoor golf centers in Alberta also offer lessons, leagues, short-game practice areas, locally crafted beverages, great food, and so on. So regardless if it’s snowing, sleeting, riming, blizzarding, or whatever else it can do in Alberta, there is never a need to not play golf.
