A come from behind victory was the story of the 2013 Alberta Men’s Mid Amateur Championship. Alan Stewart of the Grande Prairie G&CC showed true grit as he battled the wet conditions and fired an impressive final round 69 to claim a 2 stroke victory over defending Champion David Schultz. Stewart finished it off in style draining a 10 foot birdie putt on the final hole. The birdie was his sixth of the day and contributed to a back nine 32 during the final round. The clutch putt was watched by media, spectators and fellow competitors from the deck of the Desert Blume GC. Overnight leader Brian Laubman struggled with the weight of a potential victory as he shot a final round 77 to fall out of contention.
Stewart and Schultz will represent Alberta at the Canadian Men’s Mid Amateur Championship at Blackhawk GC, September 3-6th. The duo will be joined by the top 25+ Mid Amateur at the Sun Life Financial Alberta Men’s Amateur Championship. The three player ‘Team Alberta’ will look to place first in the Interprovincial competition being contested on home soil.
A special thanks to Desert Blume GC for hosting a spectacular event. The entire staff did a fantastic job from the pro-shop staff to the grounds crew and food and beverage team. The course was in fantastic shape and the player’s praised the course set-up and conditions. Local volunteers in the community supported the event as spotters, shuttle drivers and scorers.

The second round of the 2013 Alberta Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship welcomed the morning wave of players on Wednesday at Desert Blume with sunny blue skies and nearly perfect early summer conditions. The afternoon groups weren’t as lucky and the players were called off the course around 3:40pm due to lightning and potential thunderstorms. After a 40min delay, play resumed and the weather cooperated for the remainder of the day.
The round one co-leader Brian Laubman extended his lead as he takes a three stroke lead heading into the final round. After his second round 77, Merv Dusyk fell 5 strokes behind the leader after Wednesday’s competition.
After a slow start on Tuesday with a 77, defending champion David Schultz made an impressive comeback shooting a 68, tying him at +1 for a share of second place with Paul Briske. The course played nearly two strokes easier on average on day 2. The final round at Desert Blume will begin tomorrow with the first group off at 7:11am, while the top three leaders tee off at 9:01am. Media and spectators are encouraged to attend.

Notable Achievement
Geoff has been one of our team prospects leading up to the Canada Summer Games and through some top notch play and hard work he would have qualified for our team at the end of may. However, due to the NCAA eligibility standards and Geoff’s graduation dates, he is unable to play in any organized golf tournaments after the end of June 2013, if he does he would lose one full year of eligibility for intercollegiate competition. Once Geoff attends the first day of classes this fall he will be cleared to play in all competitions once again. Obviously this is a difficult situation for Geoff as one of Alberta top competitors however he takes the positives out of the experience and knows that he had what it took to qualify for the squad
Team Alberta
The Team Alberta Training Program is focused at further developing the best golfers in the province to be competitive on the national stage. Selection to the Alberta Team takes place in November each year and is based on objective performance results (Order of Merit, Golf Canada and AG) and behavior and etiquette which are reviewed by the AGA Player Development Selection Committee.
2013 Home Course
The Heritage Pointe Golf Course will be the home course to Team Alberta for the 2013 golf season. Heritage Pointe has been a great supporter of our junior programming over the years, the practice area, 3-hole loop and 27-hole championship layout is the ideal facility for our top athletes to practice and play.
Titleist and Footjoy
Continue to be great supporters of high performance golf in the province and particularly to our Team AB Program.
Thank you very much to our supporters

We are very excited about our team for this years Canada Summer Games that take place at the Milby Golf Club in Sherbrooke Quebec this August! Through some great support from The Alberta Sport, Recreation Parks and Wildlife Foundation we have been able to guide a great group of prospects over the past few years. We recently visited the Milby Golf Course with 15 golfers and our coaches, which assisted us in our final team selection. Many of our training sessions and trips would not have been possible without their support and direction. Titleist and FootJoy continue to be great supporters of our high performance programming and we cannot thank them enough for their contributions!
The course will be a great challenge for the event and we feel as though we have a very established and prepared squad, which will hopefully lead us to the podium at the games.
