Hall of Fame Inductees Honored

Alberta Golf inducted Rae Milligan Simpson and Ken Tamke into the Hall of Fame. Also honored were Thelma Coutts and Bill Sturgeon as the first recipients of the Alberta Golf Distinguished Service Awards. The festivities took place on November 17, 2006 at the RedTail Landing Golf Course.

Scholarship Seminar a Success

Alberta Golf reached its goals for the seminar through educating these families about the many opportunities available. Insight and experiences were provided by past university students, parents and coaches, which will assist these up and coming juniors on their road to a post secondary education. Alberta Golf will be conducting another scholarship seminar in Edmonton in 2008.

Halpen places 5th at Mexican Amateur

April 2 , 2007
 
Todd Halpen of Calgary finished 5th after shooting a final round 74 at the 2007 Mexican Amateur. Todd was representing Canada along with fellow Canadian Amateur Team Member Keven Fortin-Simard of Quebec. The duo won the team event by one stroke with a 14 under. Keven finished 2nd in the individual event with a four round total of 281, seven strokes back from the leader. Please see the press release by the RCGA.

CN Future Links Level Four Elite Camp

Alberta selected 12 of the top 24 junior boys in the province to attend the Camp which was held at the RiverSpirit GC May 2nd and 3rd. Participants worked on effective practice strategies, course management, mental strategies, short-game techniques, and tournament preparation. The Wolverton Alberta Open Pro-Am event held Monday at the Carnmoney GC raised over $35,000 for the Alberta Childrens Hospital Foundation. The money raised will be used to help complete the Healing Gardens at the Hospital.

Knight Wins Alberta Match Play

Michael Knight carried his strong play at the Wolverton Alberta Open into the Alberta Match Play, defeating Ryan Swelin 2 and 1 Friday at Carnmoney GC. Swelin and Knight will team up along with the top Alberta Amateur at the Glencoe Invitational. The three amateurs will then compete for the Morse Cup at the Pacific Coast Amateur.

Kevin (Country Hills) shot a final round 4 under to edge out his club mate, David Schultz, to win by four strokes. Frank Van Dornick will join Schultz and Temple as well as the top 25 year old plus player at the Alberta Amateur, to form the provincial Mid-Am Team.

Alberta Wins Third Consecutive Willingdon Cup

Team Alberta won its third straight Willingdon Cup and fifth since 1999 yesterday at the Canadian Mens Amateur. The team of Mitch Fox, Jordan Irwin, Mitch Evanecz, and Kris Wasylowich shot a combined 5-under 427 to win by thirteen. Kris Wasylowich finished stroke play at 9-under to earn medalist honours. “I never thought I had a chance to win it,” Stu Nicholson said after hanging on to capture the 2007 Johnson Insurance Alberta Men’s Senior Golf Championship at Bearspaw Golf & Country Club. Bearspaw happens to be Stu’s home course, he trailed the first two days but not by much, lurching behind by a couple of strokes.

The ribbon cutting on the new building located at #8 11410 27st SE (Douglasdale), will be scheduled for Spring 2008. The Condominium building's outer shell was completed in July 2007 while the interior buildout will begin in the near future. Check back to the website for updates and pictures as construction begins. Alberta Summer Games Team Gets a Financial Boost

The Frank Lindsay Golf Foundation has very generously agreed to be a major contributor toward the Alberta Canada Summer Games team. The Canada Summer Games will be held in August 2009 in Prince Edward Island and it will be the first time that the sport of golf is included in the Olympic Games precursor. The selection of Team Alberta is a three year process and 2008 is the second year of the program. Twenty four junior boys and sixteen junior girls will be attending monthly training sessions leading up to this year’s tournaments. Led by a top flight team of golf coaches, nutritionalists, fitness trainers and sport psychologists, our golfers will be poised to excel.
