Scrymgeour Wins With Final Round 66
July 5, 2013
Under cool temperatures at the Frank Lindsay Alberta Junior Championship Friday, Nicholas Scrymgeour blazed around the front side of the Edson Golf Club. Birdies at holes #1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 resulted in a 31 front side, and a 2 shot lead over Jack Wood and Ian Mmbando with nine holes to play. Mmbando started the day 2 shots back of 3rd round leaders Wood and Tyler Saunders, and like Scrymgeour, he too feasted on Edson’s front nine firing a 4 under 33 to place himself in position to make a run at Scrymgeour’s lead.
When it was all said and done however, there would be no denying Scrymgeor of the title. Despite a charge from overnight co-leader Tyler Saunders on the back nine, and Wood and Mmbando’s attempts at gaining ground, Scrymgeour’s tournament low 66 on Friday was just too good to overcome. The 10 under par Championship total gave Scrymgeor a 2 stroke victory over Saunders, 3 clear of Mmbando, and 4 ahead of 4th place finisher Wood. It took Scrymgeour’s best golf to win the Championship outright, and his magical 66 will go down as one of the best final rounds to win the Junior Championship since its inception. He will now lead Alberta Golf’s interprovincial team at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship in August. Saunders and Mmbando will join Scrymgeour in their pursuit of the coveted national team Championship title.
Patrick Murphy fired his second 69 of the Championship, on route to a commanding 9 shot victory over Jason Martens in the Juvenile Championship. The 16 year old from Crossfield went out in 3 under 34, and played a steady back side to finish at 4 under par overall for the Championship. Martens played solid for the majority of the Championship including a 68 in the 3rd round, but an opening round 77 hurt his attempt to challenge Murphy for the title.
With rounds of 72, 77, 74, 74, Landon Stellingwerf captured the boys 15 & and under age division by seven shots over 2nd and 3rd place finishers Noah Lubberding and Chandler McDowell. Stellingwerf finished the Championship at 9 over par and in 3rd place for the Juvenile Championship, behind Martens and Champion Murphy.
Alberta Golf would like to thank the Edson Golf Club, and all that volunteered to make the 2013 Frank Lindsay Alberta Junior Boys Championship a successful and memorable week!
