CALGARY – A primary teacher at a local elementary school that offers golf programming to its students through the Alberta Golf Association National Golf in Schools Program was asked this week if the Alberta Open was the Stanley Cup of golf. An astute question from such a young enthusiast was unreservedly met with a resounding answer of yes; the Alberta Open is the grand finale of the golf scene in Alberta!
Today, under pristine conditions, Alberta’s top players marched around the Carnmoney Golf Club in pursuit of the $22,400 purse with the professional winner’s share being $5,000.00.
Mitch Evanecz, a two-time runner-up started the day with a seemingly unbeatable 4 shot cushion, but the realization that Carnmoney is a fickle mistress hit home as his final round 77 plummeted him down the leaderboard to a tie for 5th.
Meanwhile the Wes Heffernan aura returned yet again as he stormed back with a final round of 6 under par 65 to win his fifth Alberta Open in seven years. His scorecard recorded 5 birdies and an eagle with just one bogey to blemish an otherwise error free round.
Bearspaw’s Scott Stiles also finished strongly recording 5 birdies as he strived for the lead, but a three putt bogey on the par 3 17thdashed his hopes.
The top amateur player for the week was Adam Novakowski from the Grande Prairie GCC. Adam’s strong play found him paired in the final group today with Evanecz and Stiles. He met the challenge with a score of 72, which at first glance seems pretty ordinary, but factoring in that he came back from a quadruple bogey 9 on the 5thhole made it the spectacular come from behind round of the week. His finish as the low amateur earned Adam a place on the 2013 Alberta Pacific Coast Amateur team.
This is the seventh straight year that the Carnmoney Golf Club has hosted the Alberta Open and the members, Board of Directors and management are to be congratulated for their support of one of Alberta Golf’s premiere events.
